It was half-past noon today (13 February 2008) when the Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, announced the dissolution of the parliament to give way to the 12th general election. Although the announcement was made one-and-a-half years short of the maximum five years tenure for the elected government, the announcment came with little surprise; albeit the Prime Minister’s statement a day earlier denying that he would be dissolving the parliament today (13 February).
So, now we have a caretaker government in charge of the country’s affairs until the Election Commission (EC) conducts our next general election to give us (the people) a chance to practice our rights, uphold democracy, and select the best candidate to become the people’s representatives. So, for all those who are above 21 years of age and have been responsible enough to register yourselves with the Election Commission (as a voter, of course!), make sure you practice your right and cast your votes – wisely!
