Celebrating Prophet Muhammad, Our Prophet

Today is the 12th of Rabī’ al-Awwal, 1447. It is, again, the day muslims around the world commemorate the birthday of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Of course, as with a lot of historical events, there are differences of opinion regarding the exact date of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The differences are, however, insignificant. The far more important fact is that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was born unto this momentary world, enlightened humankind with his teachings, and graced all of creation with his blessed presence. Celebrating the anniversary of his birth, is a sign of the highest love and respect muslims have towards the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) – a love and respect that transcends even that of to their parents, families, and friends.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the final prophet sent by God as a pillar of light, as a guide to the people on earth. He succeeds all the other prophets – 'Īsā (Jesus), Mūsā (Moses), Dāwūd (David), Ibrāhīm (Abraham), Nūh (Noah), and many others – peace be upon all of them. The form of the teachings brought by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) differ from the form of the teachings brought by the previous prophets, as Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent as the final prophet (and also the one who is given the highest station of all creation) by God to make perfect the religion, and to finally give a name to that perfected religion as Islām. The core message, however, was always the same as taught and conveyed by all the previous prophets: that there is no god but Allāh Subhānahu wa ta’ālā – and to Him alone we shall submit ourselves.

Prophets are human beings, but they are chosen by Allāh, and they are the best amongst their people. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the best amongst all prophets. Hence, he was adorned with a flawlessly perfect character. The perfect character of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is perfectly recorded in a plethora of written intellectual works throughout history. In one event, Abū Sufyān (who was then still a disbeliever and a staunch opposer of Prophet Muhammad) when asked by Heraclius (the Byzantine Emperor) about the character of Prophet Muhammad, had no option but to admit to Heraclius that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is a person who never lies, never breaks a promise, and is highly respected and trusted amongst the people of Makkah. In fact, if one studies the history of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from all the authentic sources, one will find that none of the enemies of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who lived during his time has ever accused Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) of having any flaw in character – none! They only rejected his teachings due to their own stubbornness and arrogance. Which is why, when there are people nowadays from the Western world who try to attack the character of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), it only goes to show the level of ignorance and arrogance of that person.

The fact is, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is our prophet – and he holds the highest station in all of creation (which also means that he is of an even higher station than the angels). His highly venerated station is evident until today. Today, every second on earth the name of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is being said and remembered – either during daily prayers, in the supplication of a muslim, in the daily salawāt of good muslims, or during daily lessons of the Qur’ān or the hadīth (which is happening around the world, in every muslim community, on a daily basis). No other person on earth, no matter how powerful or popular, gets that acclaim.
